“Painter of the screen” (Wim Wenders), “poet of our changing world” (Martin Scorsese), Michelangelo Antonioni is one of the masters of modern cinematography who has been able to go “deeper into the investigation of feelings” (Akira Kurosawa).
Spazio Antonioni invites us to delve into this creative universe from the materials preserved in theAntonioni Archive . The vast collection of objects, documents and works that the director entrusted to the Municipality of Ferrara reflects his cinematic research and, more generally, his aesthetic and intellectual horizon: films, notes, screenplays, stage photographs, posters, awards, drawings and paintings by Antonioni, his books and records, and the epistolary he entertained with the major protagonists of the cultural life of the last century. This heritage highlights the connection with the work of artists, filmmakers, and intellectuals who inspired the master or continue to admire him, highlighting the relevance of his work.
The museum, conceived by Dominique Païni in synergy with Enrica Fico Antonioni, offers itself as a place of discovery and study of the work of one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century. To accompany the visitor on this journey, the architectural firm Alvisi Kirimoto has designed a fluid and dynamic itinerary, marked by crisp and essential volumes, which is inspired by Antonioni’s rarefied atmospheres and unravels in a chronological narrative through the seasons of his cinema.
Alongside the permanent exhibition, a large multi-purpose space is dedicated to in-depth discussions and comparisons through film reviews, lectures, workshops, events and exhibitions. Four immersive rooms offer the viewing of sequences from Antonioni’s films, masterpieces of 20th-century cinema that continue to interrogate the reality of the third millennium.
