The faces of America

Spazio Antonioni

Corso Porta Mare 5

A new appointment at Spazio Antonioni recounts the encounter, on the legendary set of the film Zabriskie point, of the great Magnum photographer with one of the fathers of modern cinematography. Having landed in the United States in 1968 to portray the lights and shadows of a country that embodied the multifaceted essence of its time, Michelangelo Antonioni chose Bruce Davidson as his set photographer because of his prodigious ability to capture aspects of daily life in its humblest aspects by bringing out from each subject an unconscious grandeur and dignity.

Davidson’s reportage counts some of his best shots and is considered one of the masterful services in the history of stage photography.

Metropolitan corners, deserts, portraits explore the most fascinating and contradictory dimensions that the American environment then expressed and in which we recognize salient features of the present. Not only that, by extending the gaze beyond the usual, the most common reality takes on an unexpected poetry and the landscape can transfigure itself into an abstract work.

The programming of the brand new exhibition space, opened in June 2024 and dedicated to the discovery from the work of the great Ferrarese filmmaker, continues under the banner of dialogue between the arts.
