From April 17 to June 12, 2016, the Women’s Biennial returns to the Ferrara Pavilion of Contemporary Art, with the presentation of the group show Silencio Vivo. Women artists from Latin America , edited by Lola G. Bonora and Silvia Cirelli.
Organized by UDI-Union of Women in Italy of Ferrara and the Ferrara Galleries of Modern and Contemporary Art, the review is confirmed as one of the most anticipated events on the art calendar, and after the forced interruption in 2014, due to the earthquake that hit Ferrara and its exhibition spaces, it can now resume its path of research and exploration of international female creativity.
Always attentive to the relationship between art and contemporary society, the Women’s Biennial intends to focus on the sociocultural, identity and geopolitical issues that influence the aesthetic contributions of today’s panorama of women artists. In this direction, this year’s review has chosen to shift its center of gravity to the multifaceted Latin American creativity, bringing to Ferrara some of the voices that best represent this exceptional expressive plurality:Anna Maria Maiolino (Italy-Brazil, 1942), Teresa Margolles (Mexico, 1963), Ana Mendieta (Cuba 1948 – United States 1985) and Amalia Pica (Argentina, 1978).
Silencio Vivo rediscovers contaminations in art of topical issues, questioning the Latin American reality and identifying its recurring themes, such as the experience of emigration, the dynamics following military dictatorships, censorship, crime, social balances between individual and community, the value of identity or the fragility of human relationships.
The exhibition, organized by UDI’s Women’s Biennial Committee (composed of Lola G. Bonora, Anna Maria Fioravanti Baraldi, Silvia Cirelli, Anna Quarzi, Ansalda Siroli, Dida Spano, Antonia Trasforini, and Liviana Zagagnoni) and the Gallerie d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, is curated by Lola G. Bonora and Silvia Cirelli, and is supported by the City of Ferrara and the Emilia-Romagna Region.
A bilingual Italian and English catalog will be published on the occasion of the exhibition, containing reproductions of all the works on display and biographical apparatus, together with critical contributions by Lola G. Bonora and Silvia Cirelli.
The Women’s Biennial will then be flanked by a series of collateral initiatives closely related to the exhibition’s main theme, such as a film review and literary presentations. Special attention will then be paid to the school world, with special insights designed appropriately for students during the visits.
